8 in 10 people use browsers with unique, trackable
signatures. Having a distinct browser signature means your
individual movements on the web may be easier to track,

identify users and their online activities.

Conference: Risky profiles: Societal dimensions of forensic uses of DNA analysis

Forensic uses of DNA technologies have become crucial elements of national systems of criminal justice. In addition, as a result of growing transnational mobility and the global use of information and communication technologies crime and crime prevention issues are increasingly addressed by agencies and policy actors beyond the national state. In the European context, the so-called Prüm regime obliges law enforcement authorities in all EU countries to render their forensic DNA databases searchable for other member states by 2011 (at a match/no match basis). This also means that countries which do not yet have centralized forensic DNA databases need to establish them by that date. In sum, the importance of forensic DNA databasing will continue to increase in the political and public arenas across Europe.

Die 4 Nerds in dem Video haben eine interessante Idee, die die Aufmerksamkeit der Surveillance Forscher sicherlich verdient. Ob das Ergebnis wirklich das kann und tut, was die Jungs sich vorstellen, weiß ich nicht. Schaut’s euch an.

(Ein für mich interessanter Aspekt ist die Bemerkung, dass „sharing“ ein Aspekt des Sozialen sei – die Implikationen dieser Aussage müsste man angesicht der sozialen Netzwerke einmal genauer nachgehen. Die Gabe von Marcel Mauss und eine in diese Richtung gehende anthropologische Perspektive wäre dafür durchaus brauchbar)

The International Network for Urban Research and Action (INURA) veranstaltet eine Konferenz, auf dessen call for papers auch Themen zu Ãœberwachung und Stadt Platz gefunden haben. Grund genug die Konferenz hier zu bewerben.

„The New Metropolitan Mainstream“
The last 20 years of urban development were marked by enormous urbanisation. Asia, Africa and Latinamerica experienced a tremendous growth of their cities. Besides urban sprawl a huge range of cities and metropolitan regions experienced a reurbanisation and urban renaissance. Globalisation brought about similar developments in inner cities, similar strategies of regeneration and urban transformation, among them culturalisation, privatisation of public goods and liberalisation of housing. Many regions also experienced an ongoing polarisation of urban rich and urban poor. The New Metropolitan Mainstream is found in variations in cities around the globe. The thesis is that there are the same rules that lead to similar results. INURA’s New Metropolitan Mainstream project compares the developments of the last 20 years in more than 20 cities. This will be the framework of debates and the discussions of the 20th INURA conference.

SigInt 2010

Der call for papers ist abgelaufen, das Programm aber noch nicht online – dennoch, die Sigint 2010 des CCC ist bestimmt einen Besuch wert. Dabei geht es um nicht weniger als um folgendes:

Die Bedeutung von immateriellen Gütern nimmt immer weiter zu, während die Produktionskosten sinken. Traditionelle Märkte verlangern sich in den virtuellen Raum, die Musikindustrie verdient ihr Geld mit Handytönen und Ideen kommen direkt aus dem 3D-Drucker, während liebgewonnene soziologische Begrifflichkeiten zum World Processing wie die Arbeiterklasse komplett nach China ausgesourct werden. Identitäten werden in sozialen Netzwerken jenseits von Nationen und Geschlechtern konstruiert und trotzdem gibt es immer noch die Welt der Dinge und der Internetausdrucker als allzu gegenwärtigen Gegenpol. Es ist grade dieser Verlust von Schranken der einerseits den totalen Überwachungsstaat ermöglicht und andererseits den Individuen bisher unbekannte Möglichkeiten der Entfaltung bietet, bis zum Horizont und viel weiter.
Es geht um neue und alte Räume. In der digitalen Gentrifizierung, in der Auseinandersetzung um die Grenzen der Stadt – dort wo es das neue und das alte sich begegnen findet ein Machtkampf statt. Burn the land and boil the sea, you can’t take the Net from me: Es ist diese Frontier und ihr Spirit, die treibende Kraft hinter Fortschritt und Reaktion, die uns auf der SIGINT beschäftigt. Es geht um Verstecke und Ninjas, offene Meere und Piraten, aber besonders um die Konsolen-Cowboys, -Cowgirls und wen auch immer und um das grenzenlose Neuland, wo Signale nicht zu stoppen sind und die Sonne niemals am Monitor spiegelt.

Ich bin sehr gespannt auf die Vorträge und die Umsetzung.

Kiss Kiss Kill Kill: A Symposium on the Graphic Art and Forgotten Spy Films of Cold War Europe.

University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield. 18-19 September 2010

Coinciding with the Kiss Kiss Kill Kill Exhibition, this 2-day, parallel strand symposium aims to bring together international scholars, critics, collectors, graphic artists and cinephiles to  explore the issues surrounding the European poster art and the European spy film between 1950-1985. The conference will explore the relationship between poster art, graphic design and espionage cinema during the Cold War, while providing an interdisciplinary forum for the development and appreciation of cult film, literature and the visual arts. The analysis of graphic art, poster design and rare film will consider ideas around, film archiving, marketing, European aesthetics, international audience reception, genre and state politics.

Kameras können keine Muster erkennen

Als hätten wir es geahnt, aber zumindest gehofft: Der Aufsatz/Paper eines Informatikers zu den (Un)Möglichkeiten von Kameras Muster richtig zu erkennen könnte hilfreich für die Argumentation sein – aber wird das ein Argument gegen noch mehr und noch bessere Kameras sein? Ich befürchte nicht.

cfp: What is Technology?

Call for Papers – ISSJ N° 205 – „What is Technology? – Theory, History, Ontology“ – The International Social Science Journal, UNESCO/Wiley-Blackwell

Reposing the Heideggerean question of Being and techné, this volume of the International Social Science Journal aspires to again ask „what is technology?“ and interrogate the effects of technology on subjectivity, psyche and the body. We ask how the technological infiltrates and shapes social facts and problematize the long-standing distinction between nature and techné. How are post-modern subjectivities interpolated by the technological and how is the very notion of the human called into question in light of advances in science and technology?

Moreover, this issue will seek to telescope the very possibility of an ethics of science and technology and the philosophical grounds for such an ethics in an age bereft of all narratives of transcendence. Themes to be engaged include

1. History/Theory
2. The post-human/trans-human/cyborgs
3. Cybernetics, Nanotechnology, and Converging Technologies
4. Language, Culture, Subjectivity

Contributions can emerge from any discipline and theoretical orientation.

Magister Arbeit zu Videoüberwachung

Robert Rothmann: Videoüberwachung als Instrument der Kriminalprävention. Eine quantitative Analyse von Akzeptanz und Sicherheitsgefühl auf ausgesuchten Wiener Kriminalitätsbrennpunkten.

Die Arbeit setzt sich zu Beginn mit der sukzessiven Etablierung von Videoüberwachung und den damit einhergehenden rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen in Österreich auseinander. Den Kern bildet die analytische Auswertung einer quantitativen Straßenbefragung auf Plätzen der Wiener Innenstadt, welche seitens der Exekutive als Kriminalitätsbrennpunkte ausgewiesen und aus diesem Grund mit Videoüberwachungssystemen ausgestattet wurden. …..  Im Zuge der Auswertung kann entgegen allen Erwartungen gezeigt werden, dass kein statistischer Zusammenhang zwischen der Wahrnehmung der Videoüberwachung vor Ort und dem konstatierten subjektiven Sicherheitsgefühl der Passanten vor Ort besteht. Weiters wird ….. ersichtlich, dass die allgemein recht hoch ausfallende Zustimmung bzw. Akzeptanz gegenüber der Maßnahme Videoüberwachung kaum von soziodemographischen Merkmalen wie Alter, Bildung und Geschlecht, sondern maßgeblich von überhöhten Effektivitätsannahmen und gering ausgeprägten Datenschutzbedenken getragen wird.
