Mobilität und allgegenwärtige Überwachung

Im Rahmen der britischen JISC Initiative Living Books about Live – ist ein open access Buch zum Thema Ubiquitous Surveillance erschienen.

While not everyone in the late 90s could be characterized as a cyberutopian, the dominant mood harbored a sense that the digital network would bring with it newfound, unregulatable freedoms [.....]
Flash forward fifteen years and the present looks significantly different from the one envisioned in the 1990s. Instead of a future of Second Life and virtual worlds, we ended up building one that more closely resembles Minority Report. Advances in technology, an increasingly regulated and monitored digital network, and a general atmosphere of securitization have yielded a world of ubiquitous, if not always visible, surveillance.

Der Inhaltverzeichnis liest sich gut und weckt die Neugier – vor allem weil es sich um Autoren und thematische Perspektiven handelt, die nicht so oft prominent vorkommen – hauptsächlich aus einem eher technische, Computer, Mensch-Maschinen-Interface, Medien Kontext. Vor allem geht es um Mobile Anwendungen und die Folgen und Konsequenzen im Zusammenhang mit Überwachung. Es könnte sich also durchaus lohnen.

Überwachung und Mega-Sportveranstaltungen

Die neueste Ausgabe von Urban Studies (November 2011; 48 (15)) widmet sich dem Thema der Mega-Sportveranstaltungen von der Fußball WM zu den Olympischen Spielen, nachzulesen und zum freien Download hier: Special Issue: Security and Surveillance at Sport Mega Events – Guest editors: Richard Giulianotti and Francisco Klauser.

Die Zusammenstellung passt gut zum Buch Security Games, welches vor ein paar Monaten erschienen ist und welches hier vorgestellt wurde. Manche Überschneidung thematisch und von den Autoren her ist sehr nah, ein paar neue Sachen sind aber auch dabei. Insgesamt eine sehr gute Übersicht, sowohl im Sammelband als auch in der Urban Studies.

Internet und Überwachung – neues Buch

Die Kollegen Cjristian Fuchs, Kees Boersma, Anders Albrechtsl und  Marisol Sandoval haben ein Buch zum Internet und den Herausforderungen hinsichtlich der Überwachung herausgegeben:

Polar #11: Sicherheit

Polar, die Zeitschrift für Politik, Theorie und Alltag, beschäftigt sich in ihrer aktuellen Ausgabe mit dem Thema Sicherheit:

»Gib mir ein kleines bisschen Sicherheit in einer Welt in der nichts sicher scheint« singen die Chart-Breaker Silbermond und treffen damit den Zeitgeist. Während früher »Wagnis« und »Risiko« die Zauberworte waren, so scheint es heute gerade der Schutz vor den Risiken der Welt zu sein, der schon die Jugend umtreibt. Vom Rest ganz zu schweigen. Entsprechend sehen etwa die Goldenen Zitronen in Silbermond »die unwidersprochene Speerspitze des popkulturell verhandelten Sicherheits-Dispositivs«. polar geht diesem neuen Sicherheitsbegehren in seiner neuen Ausgabe nach.

Buch: Software und Alltag

Das neue Buch der beiden Geografen Rob Kitchin und Martin Dodge Code/Space Software and Everyday Life hört sich interessant an – immerhin wollen sie an empirischem Material zeigen, dass Software/Code nicht neutral ist, dass es mehr ist als nur Buchstaben und Zahlen, eben eine gesellschaftliche Bedeutung darüber hinaus hat. Ein Ansatz, der viel genutzt, aber bisher eher weniger deutlich ausgeführt wurde. Mehr dazu, wenn ich da mal reingeschaut habe.

After little more than half a century since its initial development, computer code is extensively and intimately woven into the fabric of our everyday lives. From the digital alarm clock that wakes us to the air traffic control system that guides our plane in for a landing, software is shaping our world: it creates new ways of undertaking tasks, speeds up and automates existing practices, transforms social and economic relations, and offers new forms of cultural activity, personal empowerment, and modes of play. In Code/Space, Rob Kitchin and Martin Dodge examine software from a spatial perspective, analyzing the dyadic relationship of software and space. The production of space, they argue, is increasingly dependent on code, and code is written to produce space.
