Surveillance studies at ISA World Congress

On Tuesday and Wednesday the adhoc-session on Surveillance, Security and social sorting at the Sociology World Congress in Durban was being held. 12 papers were presented that had shown the wide range of surveillance studies and importance in many fields of the sciences and in society as such. Instead of dwelling on each individual paper I will try to give you an impression of the threads that ran through both of the sessions and highlight some aspects in particular.
The session was kicked off by David Lyon asking the speakers to watch out for commonalities throughout the papers - giving a working definition of surveillance that indeed the talks were able to follow

Surveillance should be seen as the routine and systematic attention/checking of personal data (through screening, recording etc.) for the purpose of control, management, entitlement, influence, access etc.

This is a loose quote of what he said - but something scholars of surveillance phenomena should debate and refine when discussing surveillance issues. Now to the papers…..

Yet more security in Durban

As the conference is moving forwards, we learned more about security issues in Durban. Two tours brought us to see the control rooms of the city’s own CCTV system and it cameras scattered all around town - and to that of the Suncoast casino’s… a highly efficient and very professional surveillance system that leaves little left to wish for… what I found a little disturbing though was the sign at the entrance to the casino.. not so much for the casino but for the general atmosphere in Durban or South Africa for that matter.

Sociologists under Securveillance

Two days into the conference and you hear everybody talking about the ones that have been mugged. i have heard that around ten people have been held up at knife point and robbed of their money. Whereever you go you will get the advice to be either vigilant or not to go at all … take a taxi, do not walk there, take the shuttle bus.

Doing surveillance in Durban

Even before the conference started I was doing some surveillance outside Durban - in Kwa Zulu Natal’s Hluhluwe Game Resort… Zebras, buffalos, wildebeests, warthogs, rhinos and other fantastic animals can be spotted there… here we watched some zebras and warthogs in the savannah….

Next will be about cameras and security in Durban…

Wenn Orwell die Realität ist - wie sieht die Zukunft aus?

Jahre nach dem Orwelljahr 1984 hat die einst so bedrohliche Vision ihren Schrecken verloren. Der immerwährende Krieg erinnert an den seit 2001 stattfindenden “War on Terror”, Nachrichten- und Medienmanipulation ist an der Tagesordnung und (versteckte) Kameras sind allgegenwärtig. Doch auch die anderen düsteren Visionen einer Zukunft haben längst ihren Weg in die Gegenwart gefunden und sind (fast) Realität. Wenn Lehrerinnen wegen einer Wahrscheinlichkeit einer Erbkrankheit ihren Arbeitsvertrag nicht bekommen, erinnert dies an “Gattaca”, die Spaß- und Wegwerfgesellschaft kennt man aus “Schöne neue Welt”, die Bestrebungen “antisoziales Verhalten, selbst in Form eines Spuckens auf die Straße zu beenden”, an “Demolition Man” und die selbständigen Drohnen im Krieg lassen Erinnerungen an “Screamers” aufkommen. Doch wenn all dies schon normal ist, wie sieht die Zukunft aus? Wird es eine Rückbesinnung auf mehr Freiheit, mehr Bürgerrechte geben oder nimmt das Panopticum zu? Wird Datenschutz eine Rolle spielen oder doch nur “Täterschutz” sein?

Auf diese Fragen sucht “Schreibrecht 2006″ eine Antwort.

Willkommen bei surveillance-studies.org

So hier ist es - das Weblog des Forschungsnetzwerkes Surveillance-Studies. In den kommenden Tagen, Wochen und Monaten wollen wir hier ein Netzwerk aufbauen, Informationen zu aktuellen Themen und Forschung rund um die Aspekte, Überwachung, Kontrolle, Technologie uvam. bereit stellen.

Wir laden alle Interessierten ein, Teil des Netzwerkes zu werden, das Weblog zu vernetzen und zu nutzen. Wir stehen gerade am Anfang….. der Inhalt und das Profil werden also von jetzt an wachsen und Moment aufnehmen… u.a. mit eurer Hilfe….

Wir freuen uns auf eine interessante Vernetzung und Austausch.
