Kampfinsekten

…..In the meantime, the future is now and Pentagon expert Nick Turse is at work — see below — on the latest developments in DARPA’s plans to help an overstretched military by reaching into the insect kingdom for its newest well weaponized recruits. The first larval Marines, perhaps. Ten-HUT! Unlike Americans at present, they should simply swarm to the recruiting offices…..

Smells suspicious
Dogs have long been used by police forces to detect drugs and explosives. But now animals and machines are being trained and developed to sniff out a person’s potential for aggression, if they are feeling guilty - even their race. Amber Marks reports

Workshop: Spacecowboys

Spacecowboys - a workshop about hybrid spaces :: May 6-7, 2008 ::
Z33, Hasselt, Belgium :: 15-20 participants within a wide range of disciplines
Free.

Our feeling of space and place changes and refreshes constantly through the
interaction and communication possibilities of new media. Locations and
environments may be altered from public to a private and from concrete to
virtual through mobile technologies. These hybrid spaces create emotional
and aesthetic possibilities for artists to experiment with. How do artists
work with hybrid space and how do they make us aware of the social and
cultural implications?

This workshop will be moderated by John Hopkins. Speakers & guests: Armin
Medosh, Anne Nigten, Jeanne van Heeswijk, Eric Kluitenberg, Kurt Vanhoutte,
Peter Westenberg, Maja Kuzmanovic and Pieter van Bogaert.

Vorladung wegen SMS Nachrichten

Although the service, called TXTmob, was widely used by demonstrators, reporters and possibly even police officers, little was known about its inventors. Last month, however, the New York City Law Department issued a subpoena to Tad Hirsch, a doctoral candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who wrote the code that created TXTmob.

Lawyers representing the city in lawsuits filed by hundreds of people arrested during the convention asked Mr. Hirsch to hand over voluminous records revealing the content of messages exchanged on his service and identifying people who sent and received messages. Mr. Hirsch says that some of the subpoenaed material no longer exists and that he believes he has the right to keep other information secret.

March 20, 2008—A handful of government agencies and private companies such as electronics suppliers are employing a clandestine RFID system known as NOX that allows them to use RFID interrogators hidden in walls, in conjunction with video surveillance and, in some cases, luminescent dust, to thwart theft or other unauthorized activities within their facilities.

Hier kann man sehr anschaulich verstehen, was u.a. mit dem Begriff der surveillant assemblage gemeint ist.

Surveillance & Society: New Issue on Inequality

Surveillance and Inequality, vol. 5 (3), edited by Torin Monahan
From the Editorial:

Many domains of social life are being transfigured by new technologies of identification, monitoring, tracking, data analysis, and control. The lived experiences of people subjected to surveillance, however, can vary widely along lines of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and nationality. This can be seen with the enforcement of different types of mobilities for different categories of people, whether at borders, on city streets, or on the Internet. It can also be observed with the increasingly invasive monitoring and disciplining of those accessing public services, such as welfare, public education, or healthcare, especially in the U.S. It can be perceived in security-screening and police-profiling practices, which continue to rely upon racial markers of “risk.” Or inequality can be found in the uneven treatment of individuals by insurance providers, credit agencies, service centers, or other commercial entities. Regardless of the domain, new surveillance systems often amplify existing social inequalities and reproduce regimes of control and/or exclusion of marginalized groups in societies.
